How to Calculate the Amount of Porcelain Tile

Accurate Calculation Is the Key to a Successful Installation

Before purchasing flooring material, it is important not only to choose the right design and format but also to understand how to calculate the quantity of porcelain stoneware correctly. Mistakes at this stage can result in material shortages during installation or unnecessary expenses due to overbuying.

To avoid such issues, you should determine in advance how much porcelain stoneware is needed for the floor, taking into account the room size, tile format, and installation method.

Step 1. Measure the Area of the Room

The first step is to calculate the total area. For a rectangular room, multiply length by width. For example, a 5 × 4 m room has an area of 20 m².

If the space has a complex shape with niches or projections, divide it into simple rectangles, calculate each area separately, and then add them together.

Every calculation of porcelain stoneware per square meter starts with this measurement.

Step 2. Consider the Tile Size

Once you know the total area, the next step is understanding how to calculate porcelain stoneware for the floor based on tile dimensions. For example, if you choose a 600 × 600 mm tile (0.6 × 0.6 m), the area of one tile is 0.36 m².

To determine how much porcelain stoneware to buy, divide the room area by the area of one tile:

20 ÷ 0.36 = 55.5

Round up to the next whole number — in this case, 56 tiles.

However, this is not the final figure.

Step 3. Add a Safety Margin

A reserve is always necessary. It compensates for:

  • cutting along walls
  • possible breakage
  • transportation damage
  • installation mistakes

For standard straight installation, it is recommended to add 5–7%. For diagonal or complex layouts, increase the reserve to 10–15%.

So if 56 tiles are required, adding a 10% margin means purchasing approximately 62 tiles.

This is how you correctly determine how much porcelain stoneware is needed for the floor without the risk of shortages.

Step 4. Large and Thick Formats

If you are using reinforced materials such as 20 mm tiles, the calculation principle remains the same. However, you should consider installation specifics and potential additional cutting.

You can learn more about this format in the article Where 20 mm Porcelain Stoneware Is Used.

When installing outdoors or on adjustable pedestals, increasing the reserve slightly is recommended, especially if the base has a complex layout.

Calculating Porcelain Stoneware for Irregular Spaces

For rooms with unusual geometry, it is best to create a layout plan in advance. This helps identify cutting zones and calculate the required material more accurately.

A professional approach includes:

  • preparing a layout drawing
  • determining installation direction
  • calculating full rows
  • estimating cut pieces

This method provides a clearer understanding of how much porcelain stoneware to purchase and helps avoid overspending.

Common Calculation Mistakes

When calculating independently, common mistakes include:

  • rounding down instead of up
  • forgetting to add a reserve
  • ignoring packaging quantities
  • mixing different production batches

To achieve an accurate result, it is important to consider both surface area and technical installation factors.
